Have these people not got any idea about the tainted blood that was used to treat haemophiliacs in the 80's? There is a good reason why people who have a high risk of contracting HIV are not able to donate blood.

I agree it is not perfect, but it is important to minimise the risk that tainted blood could once again get into the supply stream. I believe intravenous drug users are also banned.

Yes but gay men aren't necessarily at high risk any more than straight people are at high risk.

Statistically, they are because of the greater prevalence of anal sex in that population. It's been known for a very long time that that is the highest risk activity, largely because of the potential for tears in anal skin which make infection more likely.
