Lawyers are hired to do a job. Your plumber or electrician doesn't necessarily agree with your politics, and lawyers routinely defend clients that don't always agree with (think: Death Row). How can the ADF be the only game in town for these lawsuits defending women's sports?

What is the reason, though? Surely there can't be only ONE law firm willing to take these cases?

A lot of these cases are done through firms pro bono schemes. If a firm is going to commit significant resources there is pressure for the case to be reputationally enhancing. I suspect there is a (unfounded) fear of reputational damage from these cases.

Depressing.

Sorry, it's not that simple. The conservative war against gay marriage (which they lost decisively) and certain other hot-button social issues are not considered "what's right" by many people.

On the conservative side of the aisle, ADF has a stellar reputation. I suppose each liberal law firm will need to speak for itself why it doesn’t take up a case to defend women; I can only surmise it is philosophical bias.

I suspect they are concerned about being on the "wrong side of history;" though it is a bit surprising that firms which regularly represent management/schools in Title VII/IX cases respectively are not seeking out these cases.

It’s a shame. Just as no attorney is willing to represent detrans either. You would think from the financial point of view if/when they sue them, the monetary reward will be huge. The fear and political hold is real.
