How is this about anything "neatly" mapping onto anything? "Butch" and "effeminate" are just terms most people understand to mean certain characteristics. No one decided anything outside of those descriptors.

It is in answer to your question. 'Masc/Fem' are relative to time, place & culture. There is nothing inherently feminine about, for example, long hair. There are many women who reject 'femininity' as such, who experience the same censure, but are heterosexual.

However it seems that in cases such as Phoebe Waller-Bridge & Stella O'Malley who were 'tom boys' as girls, it was puberty & heterosexuality which made them come to terms with and want to be seen as female. There are a lot of lesbians who aren't butch too. Hence no neat mapping.

Again, how do you get "neat mapping" from the original tweet? Point was, a not-insignificant number of ppl (some being LG) are very gender atypical from a young age (irrespective of social environment), so socialization isn't adequate as a reason. It's no more or less than that.

But the question is posed from a gendered bias. Babies are born with different personalities. The adult world decides what 'gendered' parameters are & which babies/toddlers do not confirm to them.

Personality isn't formed at birth. Clearly it's a combination of nature-nurture. But there's a body of research showing some familial similarities. Most compelling is identical twin studies of twins separated/raised in separate environments.

People are obviously shaped by their experiences, but babies are born with very different personalities.

And it appears certain personality characteristics more typical of one sex than the other may be influenced by prenatal T and other not-strictly-social factors. That's really all the original tweet (and supporting research) says.

Since the research suggests that the predictors start to settle in around pre-school age - how much is peer socialisation a determining factor? Many parents experience their kids coming home from preschool, showing 'gendered' preferences they never had at home. Cont/

Most children settle into same sexed social groups and increasingly so as they grow up through primary school. Perhaps it is more seeking only friendships with the opposite sex that really galvanises the non-conforming (to gendered expectations) behaviour in those who are L&G?

I like your use of the term "galvanise." That would happen later, as you suggest. The particular research I was pointing to was very early childhood behavior. Not all those kids were in a preschool, and they weren't all raised the same way (Hines).

Yes and some didn't show signs until later. It would be interesting to know if there is correlation through peer & sibling socialisation. Many people have anecdotes about copying older siblings interests & behaviour or trying to fit in with peers at school.
