Melissa Hines & colleagues have researched and written extensively about gender atypicality in early childhood, including this seminal study of ~5K people. They note (see last sentence in this abstract) that the behaviors occurred *irrespective* of family approval or disapprovalpic.twitter.com/RXPnUWTALA
A lazy cop-out. It doesn't mean we cannot reasonably infer the most plausible explanation. The most reasonable explanation we can infer from the available evidence is that the variance in gendered toy preferences, both within and between the sexes, is to a large degree innate.
Nope, no one has said sex differences are always large, nor is there any reason to expect them to be. Most are small. But even Janet Hyde, author of the gender similarity hypothesis, concedes that there are some sex differences that are quite large. https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/25f3/145d6f4dc126c41948b03c07502dc7b20e3a.pdf …
And even small differences can have drastic effects since the y become more marked at the tails. Another example of a large difference is childhood toy preferences, not mentioned in Hyde's study. That most sex diffs are vanishingly small is perfectly congruent with evo theory.
Here's the conclusion from Hyde's meta-analysis https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/25f3/145d6f4dc126c41948b03c07502dc7b20e3a.pdf …pic.twitter.com/uMQ9u5WHkh
"Mental rotation" -- related to the studies showing even when FTMs are on T for a short period, that skill improves, while verbal facility goes down.
Classic example of a trade-off, general intelligence is the same but some slight diffs in speciality.
