      1. HEADS-UP to anyone who cares about free speech and the hounding of academics who won't toe the line: US feminist studies PhD. candidate/teaching assistant Laura Tanner @saltyfemst is the target of an escalating coordinated smear campaign at @ucsantabarbara . As the opener of this thread, I would like to say, hate speech is not free speech and trans rights are human rights

      A) “hate speech” should be protected if it doesn’t incite violence b) not even “the oppressed” get to unilaterally decide what counts as hate speech, c) human rights do not include the right to shut people up because you beg to differ. They do include the right to free speech.

I'd just add that "incitement of violence" is still vague enough of a concept that it can, and is, abused by people trying to shut people up. In the U.S., government is restricted to prosecuting where someone incites "imminent lawless action" and such is *likely" to occur.

A lot of college kids not only don't understand the meaning and purpose of our First Amendment; they seriously undervalue it, not realizing how they could be on the receiving end of a silencing campaign if power relations shift (as,historically they always have).

Colleges would do well to drop grievance studies credit requirements and have everyone study a little constitutional law. You make an excellent point about asking what happens when your opponents take over, which I have preached for years.

Casey (in this thread, who is key to the smear campaign vs. @saltyfemst ) is certain she's doing the compassionate & righteous thing. It's really the fault of universities and too many professors for inculcating this way of thinking in idealistic young people.

You’re right I think I’m doing the right thing by aiding in the protection of a community of ucsb students who were effected by several incidents. Being attacked (and sued? Lol) this an aggressive reaction, everyone has an opinion but student safety comes first.

How do you define "safety"? What "incidents"? Was someone physically threatened? If not, how do ideas threaten student safety? Universities were once a place where challenging ideas key to education, and the development of nuanced/critical thinking.

Casey, if you use "safety" in such a way as you do, namely apparently as "the exclusion of everything that makes students feel uncomfortable," "student safety" does not come first. Comfort is not a moral or legal value. Free speech is.
