Important correction to the 17-year-old euthanasia story: It is FALSE. She asked for but did not receive that service, and later effectively ended her own life by refusing food and liquid.https://twitter.com/NaomiOhReally/status/1136196382585438208 …

It appears that she was repeatedly traumatised in medical care, refused ECT treatment and allowed by doctors to starve to death, which is every bit as unethical if not more so. https://mobile.twitter.com/pas_jeff/status/1136239486352920577 …

Yeah, the only thing that didn’t happen is her request for euthanasia under that program being approved. Everything else, including passive euthanasia, happened. So while the reports contained important inaccuracies, it’s far from “fake news, move on folks, nothing to see here”.

Agree the "treatment" she received was appalling, but not force-feeding a person who refuses food and drink isn't the same as euthanasia. It's important to acknowledge that this was misreported, while still discussing the ethical issues.

It's actually dying of dehydration, not starvation, if liquids are withheld. There's a whole movement around it; entirely legal, because you can't force a patient to eat/drink. But yes, this was a 17-yr-old girl, not an adult with a terminal illness. https://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/25/health/voluntarily-stopping-eating-drinking.html …

The State actively killing someone via lethal injection is not remotely in the same ballpark as not force-feeding (or force-hydrating) someone who won't eat or drink. It's not a minor error; it's a failure of journalism, as @kittypurrzog discusses here:
