Especially teens who are introverted or having social difficulties. Whereas in earlier times, such youth would have HAD to develop real-life coping skills, now they can escape into a synthetic reality. Even the best parents can be shut out, & individuation = cyber-identity.

YES! In Hold on to your kids they discuss what they describe as "peer-oriented kids" and describe this phenomenon in detail. Kids should be attached to their loving parents, not strangers' opinions on tumblr....

Easier said than done nowadays...one of the most difficult things is limiting an adolescent's Internet, when the zeitgeist is unfettered access.

Couldn't agree more. Adopting virtual identities at the expense of our physical selves is having a huge and deleterious effect, especially on young people. It is, by far, the mental health issue of our age.
