The stigma of suicide was and remains strong so no doubt improved recording is relevant. Child suicide is still (thankfully) rare and makes the news. The most common theme I see in the accounts I've read is unrestricted use of social media. 1/

Also, youth rates for attempted suicide are higher than the rates for older adults even among the general population. But the rates of completed suicide are higher among older adults than among youth.

Shocking to see a victimizing transphobe claim suicides were never covered up because they were considered scandalous, that causes can't POSSIBLY be identified better now, and that this time period has the exact same stressors and no more available data than the rest of history.

For the same reason female autistic suicide rates have "gone up" recently: we're now able to identify more autistic women and can better count what happens to them. It's not difficult to understand that statistics about marginalised groups change w improved identification.
