This UK bullshit w/police getting called over tweets is reinforcing my belief that it's a mistake to equate supporting trans *people* and *rights* with believing in specific, oft-questionable ontological/philosophical claims about gender (ID)/sex/etc. Too radical, too online.

Despite claims to the contrary, liberals aren't that split on basic trans-rights questions. They ARE deeply split on all the philosophical/ontological stuff getting built out from that fight, which is increasingly being portrayed as a prerequisite for *actually* being pro-trans.

If you make your core message "Trans people exist and deserve to be treated with dignity," you'll be able to (slowly) convince anyone who gets to know a trans person or 2 (see the rapid uptick in gay-rights acceptance). If you make your core message "Biological sex isn't real,"

or focus on other radical claims that are, frankly, often pretty half-baked, you risk completely turning off undecided people. Plus you're throwing under the bus the MANY (maybe majority of) trans people who themselves have rather vanilla/moderate views on sex/gednder/etc.

And too often women and girls are the ones paying the price--including a growing number of lesbians who regret transitioning. Virtue signaling about trans rights, as if it's somehow equivalent to the earlier LG rights movement, isn't enough. A much more nuanced approach is needed

It's not just "philosophical" arguments about the meaning of gender and sex. There are real-world unintended consequences to the liberal embrace of trans rights--again, with females bearing the brunt. In the UK some liberals are starting to see this. In the US--not so much.

For instance: This is not a matter of philosophical/ontological debates. Nor is it a question of denying human rights to trans ppl. It's about negative impacts on women/girls/FTMs, a subject no liberal media outlet in the US will cover.https://twitter.com/Transgendertrd/status/1093182553039794182 …
