"Passionate certainty" is very typical of adolescents in general. Anyone who had worked with teens, parented teens, or taught middle/high school sees this. Teens KNOW they're going to play in the NBA, or marry their baby's daddy, or be a supermodel. Nothing can dissuade them.

I always thought being suicidal was a barrier to informed consent. If somebody claims to be suicidal, then they are not thinking rationally and therefore you can't give them elective surgery. You'd have to treat the suicide ideation first.
