Well, like you, I don’t have a perfect view of the present moment. We’re all standing in it as it unfolds. What I would say is that what you disturbingly call “social contagion”, I call “social change.”

Feminism, gay, lesbian and bi politics, and the trans movement, have changed the meanings of sex, gender and the body, and so changed the course of history.

Why more trans guys? I would say it’s more possible to come out as a trans guy than a trans girl these days because of the vitriol this society directs at trans women.

Why the increase in numbers? The meaning of trans is not the same as it once was, and a parent would need to listen to their kid, and welcome their kids thoughts and ideas, to understand what they meant by the term.

Why change the body? I understand some trans youth only alter aspects of their bodies these days. Are we moving toward a time when altering one’s body will become more common? I don’t know. It’s possible.

None of this is bad and is merely new. What’s not new, is parents being appalled by the choices their teens make, and blaming society or various scapegoated groups for the barriers that they themselves have placed between themselves and their kids.

In the 80s and 90s, parents lost their minds about their teens coming out as gay or bi. That called it contagion. They blamed adult gays and lesbians. They drove a wedge between themselves and their own kids.

They said it was a permanent lifestyle decision, that there was no coming back. They prayed instead of learning listening skills. They were wrong and did tremendous damage to their children, who mostly grew up without and in spite of them.

You say you don’t need parenting advice, but as the parent of an 8 and 12 year old myself, I find we all need parenting advice, and we all find it intolerable to accept that advice and to admit our terrible parenting mistakes.

The main thing I take from the 4th wave now site, is how profoundly mistaken the parents are. I wish them the best, even as they wish people like me harm. I hope they can repair their relationships with their kids and love them as they deserve, no matter who they grow up to be.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Prove that contributors to 4thWaveNow wish **anyone** harm--"people like you" or our own kids. Maybe think before you tweet defamatory accusations about families whom you know nothing about.

Perhaps the profoundly transphobic content is in the comments and not the articles themselves. In any case there is nothing to discuss since we could not possibly agree on this.

Jake, you are obviously a stakeholder in more ways than one. Being a supportive parent does not equate to going along with irreversible medical harm. We can be supportive of GNC youth-- & still question the wisdom of cutting off healthy breasts, losing fertility, natural voices..

@4th_WaveNow it is easier to be on their self-righteous high horse if they pretend we are monsters wishing them evil. It's more difficult to play the victim when they are talking to loving parents who don't want to poison their kids with harmful hormones
