https://www.theguardian.com/society/2018/nov/03/tavistock-centre-gender-identity-clinic-accused-fast-tracking-young-adults … "...we are always mindful that gender dysphoria is not in and of itself a mental health diagnosis." Umm, excuse me. Gender Dysphoria is a mental health diagnosis in the DSM-5. I don't understand the basis of this statement. Can anyone enlighten me? /1

Right. Tavistock & the NHS should not be buttressing the politics, but informing the public that it is. Which brings up the larger elephant in the room: is the NHS being bullied into political compliance? If this is not a mental health issue, let's free up the funds for others!

I believe “gender dysphoria” is now known as “gender incongruence” and has been moved out of the mental health section of the ICD-11 and into the sexual health section. (Presumably to justify its treatment with hormones etc?)

What is the claimed lack of health, then?

The distress caused by gender incongruence, presumably. The move is designed to destigmatise gender incongruence and make it an entirely medical matter. I don’t agree with it, but there it is.

But the mental distress is not what is being treated, so the question stands.

No idea. Some seem to see it as a hormonal problem that deserves medicating (eg like menopausal women who choose to have hrt to relieve their symptoms).

Yes, this was planned: to "depathologize" gender dysphoria but still have a billing code. It's all about having a code to bill to so it's not seen as "cosmetic" and thus insurance won't pay. The battle to change GD to GI has been going on for a couple years, totally political.

Have seen many trans activists say "gender incongruence" is essentially a birth defect. Hormones and surgeries may be needed (but not required--only if the person wants them) to "correct" the birth defect. Medical necessity. It was a clever strategy and they succeeded.

Helpful to understand, but how do you even begin to challenge the WHO? I assume we’re stuck with the ICD-11 for decades now?

If you actually tell them they have a birth defect, as per their official diagnosis, they will ban you from their google groups! 🤣 Reality is what they say it is at any particular moment; "birth defect" is useful PR but they don't truly *believe* that & are offended by label.

ICD-11, forthcoming 2022? Gender Incongruence will be a Condition Related to Sexual Health. Presumably, "Conditions" will be paid for by insurance companies.

There's "mental" component in the definition http://www.who.int/topics/sexual_health/en/ … any revisions forthcoming? How is sterilising and mutilating supposed to improve sexual health?
