The irony of this is that it positions the Trump admin as being firmly on the pro-science, reality-based camp. I'd like to see Dems oppose this without coming across as completely batshit. Surprised it took Trump this long to use this as a winning wedge issue. It's a no-brainer.https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1054020763848712192 …

This is the fruit of the Dems/US Left (unlike the UK Left) ceding everything about this issue to conservatives. Because Trump is pushing it, nuanced discussion will be even more impossible.

When all the Left can do is scream "Trans women are women!!!" it invites an extreme response from the Right. There are actually reasonable, compromise solutions that could be worked out, but now it's only going to get worse.

Thing is, as SCOTUS is currently constituted, this will be upheld if lib orgs (i.e. the formerly nonpartisan ACLU) decide to challenge it legally. What's maddening as a lib is that I very much support the Trump admin on this. Talk about cognitive dissonance.

LGBT orgs staked out an extreme position on trans issues several years ago. The backlash was predictable.

US population as a whole has become less homophobic, especially since gay marriage decision. But the position taken on trans issues is too much way too fast.
