They've been watching too much Star Trek. The limited amount of body modification available to us can only be achieved by cutting & stitching, which can leave unwanted effects like scarring, nerve damage etc. Flesh can't be "moulded" like plastic.

It's funny, because when it came out, that book was absolutely revolutionary -- imagine it, a book that *actually* talked about women's bodies and how they worked, without shame and with candor.
