With due respect, 18 year olds get to make all kinds of major life choices without their parents' permission. Cover their bodies in tattoos, get married, donate a kidney, change religions, vote. Why should their medical decisions be any different?

The practice of medically transitioning minors IS experimental. It's disingenuous to promote the idea that "affirmative" care is supported by clinical consensus. It is not, as this 17-clinic survey makes very clear. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26119518
