Increasingly I see these terms used. It's as if 'Palestine' and 'Palestinian' are getting closer to Winston Smith's Memory Hole.

It’s because that was the term used for thousands of years. It’s the name used in the Bible. It’s the name used in Roman documents. It’s the name used in the UN partition plan.

Yes it was unnerving listening to a spokesman for a Jewish settlement in the West Bank claim that since Palestinians spoke Arabic they must have come from Arabia.

Up until 1950, that area was universally called Judea and Samaria. That year, the Kingdom of Jordan changed that name to ‘west bank’ to artificially connect it to the rest of Jordan, on the east bank of the Jordan River.

Never universally called Judea and Samaria because Palestinians and other Arabs never used that moniker. As for the West Bank- it’s also a colonial demarcation, true, but doesn’t negate Palestinian existence.
