Hostility at least implies unreasonableness and fear, thus limitations that can be exploited in your defense. Indifference implies... well nothing and that is frightening.

Reminds me of a line in Camus' The Outsider: "I opened myself for the first time to the tender indifference of the world."

We are either alone, or not alone in the universe. Either way its scary.

This made me imagine At The Mountains Of Madness as directed by Stanley Kubrick.

If Kubrick had lived to see Twitter, he would have retracted that statement.
