Nakajima always said that bears were his biggest influence. Their lumbering, ponderous way of walking informed how he carried himself in the first Godzilla suit. It's incredible that this influence translated through 200+ pounds of rubber so inflexible it could stand while empty!

He also looked elephant's, apes, etc during preproduction of Godzilla 1954. No one knows how the monster is going to look like.
-
Very true! Nakajima didn't know Godzilla's design until they put him in the prototype suit. For a time, he imagined Godzilla would be a giant frog! But when Tsuburaya showed him a print of King Kong for inspiration, he decided that studying animals was necessary for the role!
-
After six months of shooting, Nakajima lost 20 pounds of weight.
-
He sure did. That man was about as hardcore as they come. A cup of sweat lost every day, passing out from heat exhaustion, darn near drowning in the water scenes... This is why it bothers me when people dismiss kaiju suits as the "cheap and easy" method. They were anything but.

Dude was strong too. Because rubber was scarce after the war, the first costume was fashioned from cement and weighed over 200 pounds.https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/haruo-nakajima-godzilla-dead_us_5988eb76e4b0d79373899f7b …

Lucky enough to meet him before he passed. Never met someone as genuinely happy to see fans as him, his reactions to the collectibles and posters and movies people brought for him to sign was the cutest shit.
