I wonder if this folklore was meant to scare laborers from socializingon their lunch break. Like “shut up and do your work and don’t talk to strangers” type thing. It would also perhaps prevent unionizing and mutiny. Things that make you go hmmmmmmm.

Poludnica roughly translates to “going mad” or something that makes you go mad. The myth always seemed to me a poetic interpretation of, or metaphor for, heatstroke.

In fact, the myth is used to encourage noon breaks. “Go rest in the shade or the Poludnica will come get you”. That sort of thing.
