This makes me think that someone in the past had a better understanding of bacterial disease than we give them credit for, but it's "folklore" because that's the best they could explain it.

When it comes to Polish myth's there's not much to go by. They mostly never were written on anything. It was more of a "story past generation by generation". And the whole thing with Christianity going loko in Poland didn't help to keep up with our myths.
