In Japanese Folklore, Onryō are ghosts who were wronged during their lifetimes and come back from purgatory to seek revenge upon the living beings that have harmed them. Onryō are the most feared ghosts in Japanese legends (Illustrations: Matthew Meyer, Manzanedo)pic.twitter.com/EK4gg37QfL

Yurei just means ghost. Not necessarily vengeful.

No problem. There're actually a lot of great folk stories about the different types of yurei. Like The candy buying ghost (an ubume, a mother who died in childbirth) or Okiku (a jibakurei, a spirit bound to a particular spot).

I legit miss the j-horror onryo craze. Stringy-Haired Ghost Girls are the best.

Do you have to be Japanese or do they allow f’rners to enroll too. I need to make a will and was just wondering.

Yup! And a LOT of other J-Horror villains. People asking “why are there so many Japanese long haired ghost girl movies” is like asking “why are there so many western werewolf/vampire/Christian demon movies” - it’s part of the culture and folklore.

Love it so much! Yeah, it's funny how people don't realize how human the origins of monsters are. Born from and reflecting human fear. I always thought it awesome that, even in death, girls can get their revenge in Japanese folklore.
