The really sad thing about The Night of the Hunter is that, at the time, it wasn't highly rated, and the director (Charles Laughton) never directed another film because of the criticism it received by the film critics. Criminal.

My dear old Dad was a massive film buff and got me to watch it around 1977 (he died in 1978). I was 17 and it scared the knickers off me. Robert Mitcham in, I think, his best role.

Such a great film. The remake? Not so much.

Good lord. I had no idea they did thishttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102533/ …

Then I feel bad that you've found out this way. Personally, I'd suggest you avoid it like that one uncle (you know the one), but the choice is yours.

I'm speechless. There are some things better left untouched. 'Get Carter' and 'Night of the Hunter' are two perfect examples.
-
Also 'Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?' (remade as a TV movie in the '90's).
-
I jusr saw thst recently. Dreadful.
-
That's Hollywood, though. Don't even get me started on all the foreign language films they've remade horribly.

Love this movie. It has a surreal and eerie tone to it that I've rarely seen executed so well in movies.

That's such a great chilling and disturbing movie. Robert Mitchum plays a villain so disconcertingly real.

Love this film, I think Harry Powell is one of classic cinema's greatest villains. Robert Mitchum gives a phenomenal performance as the psychopathic preacher/serial killer with a great disdain for women.
