In norway they are known as Nisse. In the old norse they were named Gardvorden, translates to farm guard/protecter. Some lives in houses, churches, ship etc. The young don't mind doing some pranks now and then.

Heck, something strange happened in the neighbors farm were brooms and rakes would go missing now & then. One day part of the stable had to be teared down & in one wall they found some of the missing brooms.

They blamed us kids for doing it even though there was no way for us to get to that part of the wall or holes to push the brooms and rakes in there anyways.

Actually, it only takes a bowl of porridge now and then to keep Tomten happy. Not much of an effort.
