In norway its Nøkken, a creauter that lives in lakes with glowing eyes. If you were to capture Nøkken in his horse form you will have the best work horse around. But never sit on his back.
-
also with Nøkken. If someones calls your name from the lake its Nøkken calling for you and you will die one way or the other. If you see flowers growing on the lake side, thats his victims. Pick them and you sure to join his garden :U

In some parts of South Britanny and in Vendée in West of France there is a similar horse called "cheval Mallet" or "Merlet", "Merlette"... An evil white magical horse who drowns people trying to mount him.

But... But... But... Why?!
-
The purpose of this tale, and the similar Näcken, is to scare children so they avoid dangerous waters. It's fun to play at the shore, but you can fall in at any time.
-
Yeah, I guess most of tales were created to scare children to avoid dangerous places, still creepy though
