Yeah, those children are actually dead and they're being held in place by props, family or employers of the photographer.

No, they're not. See @thanatos_net for a discussion of Victorian post-mortem photography and actual uses of props. Deceased children were normally laid out as if sleeping or held in a sleeping position in a visible mother's arms.

I actually own two of the photos shown in @41Strange post! That is what might lead to some of the confusion... a lot of ppl think that because of my book and site, everything I post must be a dead person! 😊

I didn't think of that, but I knew that the answer to the questions posed could be found in your Twitter, FB, and other sites. I admit I was annoyed by such easily debunked legends attached to Victorian photography and post-mortem photography. That's why I provided sources.

Probably not the mothers, probably the nannies. They wouldn't want a photo of the nanny.

Or another possibility is that the photo would be cropped to just show the child - so the full shot with hidden carer is probably just from a studio negative and not what the customer would get.

If the mother/carer was going to be cropped out of the photo, she would't need to have a blanket over her head.

Yes she does, because then it will just look like drapery behind the kid. They didn't exactly have photoshop for the retouch work, if done at all it was painstaking with extremely fine brushes.

I'm sorry, I'm not explaining well. They didn't want the cropped photo to show a woman's clothing behind the kid but no head on the woman. The exposure time was long and the kid would squirm. Easiest way to keep the drapery in place was to drape it over the carer so it wd nt drop
