Correct me if I'm wrong but the second pic is from a short "sequel" to My Neighbor Totoro in which Mei meets the child of the catbus, a kittenbus. It's only shown in the Ghibli museum IIRC.

You're right! The short film shows more of the catbus life-cycle. They can grow to the size of a zeppelin. (I'm guessing you've seen it too)
