In Slavic Mythology, the Domovoi is a house spirit who lives in sheds, under floorboards, or in the stove and acts as a watchman. Don’t offend him or he may smother you in your sleep at nightpic.twitter.com/EkvAplbHnc

In Slavic mythology, this is not just a spirit, but the spirit of a deceased relative in this house, and if we look back in ancient times, it was believed that this was the sacrifice that was made during the construction of the house.

Kikimora - Evil spirit (wife Domovoi), appearing in the image of a small ugly old woman. If the kikimora lives in the house behind a stove or in an attic, then it constantly harms people:pic.twitter.com/WbEd3Y0x3b

This creature resembles the entity of the painting "Nachtmahr" made in 1790. It is no coincidence, both beings drown people in dreams!pic.twitter.com/h8N2E1Vmx8

I love how people of olden days would create wild, evocative creatures to embody what we now call bloodlessly, clinically “depression”, anxiety, etc.

I'm guessing offenses are not keeping a clean house or not offering him the first/best portion of food or drink, based on similar European house guardian mythology.
