He didn't even call it an insect did he? Thought whatever word he used in German was slightly less prescriptive than that?

I've seen it translated as "monstrous vermin."

That's right, knew he'd avoided specifics.

I know I am awfully late to the game, but I just felt like pointing out that the word "Ungeziefer" used by Kafka may be translated as vermin quite accurately, but that it's usually more narrow; it certainly sounds like some kind of insect pest to the German ear.

Nabokov had quite a thing for insects.

Por cierto, Vladimir Nabokov, cuyo "hobbie" era la entomología, señaló que el insecto descrito en "La Metamorfosis", era un escarabajo.

I own a copy of Nabokov’s lectures on English and Russian Literature. Incredibly insightful (and opinionated).

the description of the roach is consistent with insects that usually crawl... but hide wings beneath their hard shells with which they can fly! I have always wondered if Gregor could have just buzzed his way out his window, to infinity and beyond.

I’ve seen this floating around the internet but I can’t seem to find the source. Do you have it? A link maybe about the copy? This is a great story but I’d like to see a little bit more. Right now I smell a fish.
