I heard it explained that Crows often carry stuff in their beak out of curiosity, then when they find food they lose interest, drop it, and after eating they forget about the stuff they were carrying.

Perhaps they learn over time that by leaving shiny junk in the specific location they will receive a treat. It's similar to a cargo cult which is still sophisticated reasoning for any animal.
