Honestly, those are wise words for almost ANY creative field. Writers, chefs, fragrance noses, artists -- do what YOU believe in, what makes YOU happy, and what you think best represents YOU, and it will succeed far more than a faux PR copy. I tell this to perfumers all the time.

Do you think they listen? Also, perfumers constitute one of the few artistic/creative fields where we severely limit the palette of the artist. Nothing like giving a painter 3 colors with which to make a masterpiece. So soul killing ....

Not constricted if they rely on a wide range of aromachemicals. The ceiling numbers for something like ISO E make me shudder. But yes, some do listen. Like most things, it's a balancing act. Can't totally ignore certain market aspects but can't create what you hate or isn't you.
