Radiation can affect tree growth in a similar manner, or so I've heard, so this is rather fascinating.

The age of the trees (given that they are all roughly the same diameter around) could indicate a blast that knocked flat saplings that then grew back upright from their fallen position. I should like to know how wide spread the phenomena is.

Something similar to the Tunguska Event, perhaps? That's food for thought. (Either that or many years ago someone REALLY hated the shit out of trees and tried breaking them, lol)
