Kaori's death and the group instantly forgetting about her and going "Tetsuo's in a better place :)" always struck me as weirdly cruel bullshit, though. Her arc never sits right with me. Seems like she's there to get abused and then to pointlessly die. Feels out of place to me.

It probably feels out of place because the movie skips a lot of content from the manga which goes into a lot more detail

There's the fact that the original comic wasn't actually finished by the time the movie entered theaters; Katsuhiro Otomo had to make one up specifically for the film, and ended up taking notes from it during the remainder of Akira's print run.
