Actually it's more accurate to say Guanyu is the god of jocks. He's god of soldiers, cops, gangsters, sports teams, construction, pretty much anything that involves shirtless dudes saying the word 'bro'

There are several giant Guan Yu statues iirc. Also, he was a historical figure who fought alongside his honour brother Liu Bei in the warring states period.
