It's to protect the trees. They look much more stressed 10 years later, and some have died, so it's probably a good thing.

It's just weird seeing something modern in that setting, I'd imagine it takes from it a little bit. I was there in 2007. 
It has changed so much in that time. The city and the sites. Roads are paved. Ticketing is modernized. High end hotels. It's kind of mind blowing.
That's hard to imagine! Though it was bound to happen, I suppose.
