Nope, it was directed by Tobe Hooper. Spielberg only produced it and co-wrote the screenplay.

There is no evidence of Toby Hoppers work that would indicate that he could direct something like Poltergeist, I've long held this belief

https://www.twitter.com/poltrgthts_imag Spielberg’s script had scientist slapstick. It had Tangina quips. It would’ve been the same old alternation between thrills and personable humor as every Spielberg film. Hooper ratchets intense, serious emotion and this is clear from every film of his.
