I think they wanted to do right by the source material. It just...failed.

I don't blame the director or the cast all of which are very talented but it got absolutely destroyed by studio meddling and 8 producers and it shows in the final cut.

Maybe some studio issues. But they took on too big of his story. Excalibur and Hellboy ruling is a 2nd or 3rd film in a cohesive series. IMO
