What happens if the balloon breaks? Do they bleed to death?
-
It’s a thin membrane that inflates and deflates easily. One might think that blood vessels are abundant but it’s just a membrane. These seals, albeit exhibiting an odd mating behaviour, very rarely physically fight other males.

Interesting..

Had these seals been prone to deadly nosebleeds they would have been extinct long ago. Yay for evolution!
-
I’m talking about getting injured not nosebleeds..

You wrote: what happens if the balloon breaks (...) the membrane is part of the seals nose, hence my mention of nosebleeds. The seal will lose out on mating, but a membrane injury is unlikely to be deadly.
