I'm guessing momma cat had babies with a son, then had babies with a Male from that litter. Usually causes multiple toes.
-
Don't think so. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polydactyl_cat …
-
Have you also heard of inbreeding? That's usually how it happenshttps://www.manhattancats.com/article-archive/genetics/polydactylism-extra-toes/ …
-
That's not what your linked article says.
-
Second paragraph from the end Because many polydactyl cats carry the gene for normal toes, the trait is never fixed. ..Inbreeding would increase the percentage of polydactyl offspring, but there will always be a few normal-toed kittens in the litter because of that recessive gene
-
That does not in any way mean that inbreeding is how it usually happens. The trait is dominant, meaning that the mutation only has to be present in one parent for the offspring to exhibit it.
-
I'm saying because of inbreeding, you find more of these cats being born per litter. When cats are inbred they are likely to get this trait. Dominant trait or not. Got my boy loki with 6 on one front and 6 on one back. He passed 2 months ago because of it because of complicationspic.twitter.com/nchC4cxBnK
-
Inbreeding doesn't cause the trait tho. Any gene can be more prevalent in the litter if the parents are related but the mutation has to happen first, and it isn't caused by inbreeding. Sorry about your Loki. He looks sweet.
