  This is based on An Actual Historical Thing, called the Hand of Glory, It was made from a real hand cut from a corpse. The fingers were turned into conjoined candles, like a sort of meat-based menorah. Supposedly, burning a Hand of Glory gave the ritualist powers of invisibility.
