Why are they being excavated?
-
I don't think they are removed. Archeologist want to learn more about them. You can see the more intricate sculpting that was preserved by being buried here.pic.twitter.com/OgpUNE7S0E

Just like this statue, people are much more than what you can observe from the surface.

Dang that’s huge!!! They really implanted those sculptures deep into the earth.pic.twitter.com/2Z19ERwXXO

Also, over time the ground gets taller and buries large objects like the moai. When they were built they were probably even taller.

Cool! I wonder how high they were before being buried this far in

Fascinating. I wonder what percentage was underground originally.
-
Was gonna ask the same thing. Whether they for some reason carved this entire statue and then buried half of it... or if that much matter has been deposited on the island over the years they just became buried. Which is possible I guess since IIRC Easter Island is volcanic.
-
The archaeologist who found this is a part of the Easter Island Statue Project and she was able to conclude that they were buried not by the people but naturally by changes in the land! :D it's very cool!
