He's a pretty old stag so I'm assuming it's due to age.

Feeding wildlife is a big no-no. It's a form of habituation and it conditions the animals to become more reliant upon humans for needs they would have otherwise fulfilled themselves. They grow comfortable around humans, unfortunately not all humans are nice.
