Like most natural history museums around the world, the Chicago Field Museum uses flesh-eating beetles called Dermestes maculatus (right) to clean animal bones for displaypic.twitter.com/ULYiQQG2Sv

Maybe the same beetles, but I worked in a zooarchaeology lab years ago cataloging bones from roadkill. The beetles were fun to watch day to day. Interesting, they were interesting to watch.

I've seen their colony in person on their Members Nights, it's a huge room, full of tanks, with a double airlock to keep them from getting into the collection. Very effective little guys!

And when they don't have enough specimens to keep the beetles fed it's, well, it's kind of a horror story actually . . .

There was an especially disturbing episode of American Gothic featuring said beetles.
