In Switzerland, you’re not allowed to own just one guinea pig. The reason for this is that they’re social species, and they are considered victims of abuse if they aren’t able to regularly interact with others of their speciespic.twitter.com/EzxexWEoKU

This is why you can rent them in Switzerland! If you adopt two guinea pigs and one dies, your remaining pig needs a new friend. Adopting a new one which possibly outlives the remaining one would create an infinite problem. So instead you can rent one. Pretty awesome, I think!

That's awesome, but can you buy it after all if you get attached? Because i would.

Of course. Most people do - and yes, cause themselves an infinite „problem“. My brothers family wanted some guinnypigs „while the children are small“ - the children are grown up and a very happy bunch of pigs still lives in the house. Always new additions of „rented“ pigs :)

That's wonderful! They make such good friends. Honestly I have this eternal problem every time i get a pet of any sort, and was only able to stop having fish by giving them all away at once.

So Switzerland not only has jaw-droppingly impressive scenery, it has laws about animals' emotional well-being. This, I like. I like it very much.pic.twitter.com/gzLmslGh6x

Animals have they're own needs too. If you aren't equipped to meet those needs it's not the animal for you.

I once had some neighbors who adopted a rabbit. They not only hardly closed the cage properly so it ran away often but they didn't dare to pick it up. There should be a rule, if you can't bring yourself to hold an animal, don't adopt it. I ended up carrying it up multiple times…
