Old folklore from Eastern Europe suggests that many vampires were obsessed with counting. Millet or poppy seeds were placed on the ground at the site of the presumed vampire, in order to keep the vampire occupied all night counting. Not many people realize that Count Dracula was a command, not a title. “Count, Dracula”.

Same as for the witches in southern Italy's culture (the "Janare"). People used to pour salt on the doors edge, in order to jeep them busy in counting the numbers of grains and avoid them to enter the house.

...I think it was purely based on the term "Count" and the verb "to count" as the having to count or do another task was assigned to devils and demons and night spirits as well...

just goes to show that the older you get, the more you focus on basics/fundamentals. apparently, vampires live so long that all they can do is count. 🧛‍♂️
