The origin of Racka sheep is not clear at all. Racka sheep literally means Serbian sheep. Here it is depicted on a medieval fresco from the 14th century Serbian monastery Pećka patrijaršija http://oldeuropeanculture.blogspot.com/2015/07/racka-sheep.html …pic.twitter.com/rQw9zcdYH2

Interesting. I never made the connection between racka sheep and rác.
-
Also, how do we know those aren't Wallachian shepherds (and not Serbian)? :P
-
Well we don't...The thing is we don't even know who Wallachians were originally. Most likely mix of Celts and whoever else came to the Carpathian Mountains (Slavs, Dacians, Thracians...) Term walhaz was used by Germanic peoples to describe Celts...
-
I was just teasing. If I am not mistaken, my Hungarianized surname was originally Vlašković, which (Vlas- Vlaska- ) suggests ancient Wallachian origin, no?
-
Exactly. But just like everyone else in the Balkans (including Serbs), Vlahs are a mystery. No one really know who they were originally. And if we look at their genes, just like everyone else in the Balkans (including Serbs) they are a mix of many different people...
-
Have you followed any of the linguistic theories of the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin? There are basically two: 1) Hungarians brought language to Carpathians and forced it upon Slavs, Celts, Dacians etc etc or
-
2) Hungarians encountered mixed group of Huns/Slavs/Teutons who were speaking proto-Hungarian in the Carpathian Basin between Attila's death and arrival of Magyars.

They are seriously cool sheep. We didn't do much with the European breeds that English-speaking fiber folk can't easily get their hands on. But we couldn't resist the Racka.
