They don't need to keep warm. But it does cover up wounds from predators or other chickens pretty good. See that a lot.
According to chicken owners, it keeps them warm during molting season and prevent the chickens from picking at new feathers as they grow in.

I have never seen that explanation. It’s always been to protect them from mounting roosters.
