Exactly what I think whenever I see a contemporary artwork relying on words to convey meaning and intent.

No painter I am aware of gets right inside my head in quite the same way as Hopper. Aloof, but not insensitive. Straight forward, but not anti-intellectual.

I've always liked the lonely mystery of his paintings and make up my own stories as I'm sure everyone does

A guy sits, annoyed, trying to read the paper while his wife goes “ding, ding, ding” on the same piano key. Also, you’re looking at it through an open window. There, I did it, Hopper.

I cringe whenever I read a book where a character is a visual artist, and describes their "art". I imagine a writer thinking, "wow imagine if you took a bunch of knick knacks and glued them to a tree how awesome" or such like.

But Tom Wolfe was shocked and appalled upon learning there were prominent art critics and modern artists who believed art required THEORIES to legitimize it that could be stated in WORDS! He wrote a book about it.pic.twitter.com/Qef1BsPqLX
