Maybe the artist was signing his name one day when he noticed that within the confines of the whole of his first name lay the word 'skull', and from there, the seed of a creative idea was sown?!
-
He may have also noted the word 'mask' in his first name and thought what masks the skull? I shall remove it and display the inner workings!! *or maybe not*

That is something else, reminds me of DaVinci cutting open & studying cadavers nd thus illustrating them with precision.
