Finaly a Job a Katana was actualy made for. (And before people behead me, Katanas were made for their Region and Time and were good for that, they are however not the be all end all of bladed weaponry)
-
Katana weren't even primary weapons. It was something a samurai carried as badge of rank. Then, with the Edo period and its peace, lugging around your primary weapon, the spear, became a bit of an issue and cumbersome, so the sword took a higher spot.
-
Yeah, Swords in general were something of a hold-out weapon, usualy Spears were the most used weapon on most battlefields as they give you more reach, are easy to use and cheap to make.

The fedoras tho.

Not something they came up with. With Japan opening in the 1850s and onwards, the Bakumatsu, the Meiji restoration, etc, fashion was imported. Dressed like this with a western style hat? Pretty common into the 30s and even 40s. It's sadly a bit rare nowadays.
-
It's not the kind of blend you see every day.
