It doesn’t though, does it? Death is something we all have in common but it certainly isn’t an equaliser. ‘There is gross inequality but that’s ok because we all die’ is bollocks.

In the end everyone's a corpse. Between this and the memento mori this is kind of a Roman theme. Humility taught by way of the inevitability of death.

Humility and a shared respect is not equality.

No the equality comes from the fact that you are reduced to empty vessels in the ground, your wealth rendered utterly useless and pointless to you. In the end the ashes of a rich man are completely indescribable from the ashes of a poor man.

I understand that. My point is that it’s too late to make any difference.

But the point is to remind people of that fact in order to change their behavior. It's a symbol of the fact that your works and the people around you are the only things that outlive you.
